Home Inspectors and Credit Cards

When one speaks to a home inspector and asks why he /she doesn’t accept credit cards, the answer is almost always: “because of the fees associated with the service”

Let’s analyze this answer.

If you accept credit cards, and say for example you receive $7500.00 in credit card charges, your monthly fees could be around $150.00. Now think of how much gas for your car costs you, the electricity for your home office, the Blackberry Data Plan, your high-speed internet service? These are all expenses that you couldn’t or wouldn’t do without today. They each are a line item on your business plan, for those of us who have one.

When you work in a business that is notorious for bad checks or bounced checks, you can easily understand why it is necessary to put safeguards in place.

One of the most secure means and surest ways to get paid consistently is to accept electronic payment, face to face with your customer, preferably with a credit card, a PIN debit card, or a verified and or guaranteed check service.

Cash and Checks, which at one time were the preferred payment acceptance, have their pitfalls and expenses. There is a statistic in the payment industry that has held true for over 2 decades: 3% of all cash and checks disappear. How?

Let’s go though a sample of the culprits:
Human accounting errors, theft, bounced checks, stop payment on checks, bank check fees for processing, NSF check returns, and time spent chasing payment, labor to handle deposits, the list goes on.

Conversely, when you accept credit cards, you swipe the card, get a signature, an authorization is provided and your funds are deposited in your business account in 24-48 hours. Even if your client wants to charge back your fee for any reason, there is a support system and a process to help you resolve this. The same is not true if a client puts a stop payment on a check.

There is now an affordable wireless out-of-the-box solution that enables you to accept payments remotely, face to face with your customers.  It is a rugged, portable credit card machine that fits on your belt, or in your tool box, and lets you accept Credit Cards, Pin Debit cards, and even lets you verify or guarantee checks. Along with this system, comes a Web Based Virtual Terminal, which enables people back at the office to take deposits, pull reports, and help you manage your payments better.

The assumption that accepting credit card payments creates additional costs is a misconception.  Credit Card acceptance actually creates additional business that easily pays for itself and drives additional revenue to your bottom line. When potential clients look you up, over 90% already know what payment method they will use, Cash, Check, or Charge. Of these, 78 percent know what charge card they will use (Visa MasterCard, American Express or Discover) and will walk away from the business that does not honor it.  So ask yourself: “Do I want to be cut out of 70% of potential business every time?”

Virtual Payment Solutions offers a complete suite of products and services to enable you to accept these alternative forms of payments. Though a special program, all NACHI members are entitled to a 10% discount on our already low prices.
